I will probably not draw potato-headed likenesses of anyone's children.

I will sign anything else anyone chooses to bring along (within reason), as long as nobody takes the piss.

I'm in New York this week.

On Monday I walked across Central Park and went to the Guggenheim to see the Maurizio Cattalan show.

Amongst other things I looked at some Kandinsky paintings and drawings.

On Tuesday I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I had never been before.

This looks like it came from the pages of De Profundis.

I did some drawings while I walked around.

The layout of the museum is quite random. You walk straight from Dubuffet into Papua New Guinea.

The Egyptian Galleries are stunning.

I had been looking at a lot of pre-Rennaisance artwork, particularly woodcuts, and was very interested in their reductive visual language and lack of perspective. That imagery seemed very naturally to function in two dimensions, free from the artifice of perspective and the distractions of the third dimension.

In approaching the book I had been making a lot of drawings that aped the language of woodcuts, but for DP it became clear that this was another distraction. The language of woodcuts (the very defined lines and texture marks) is inherent to that medium, and it started to seem absurd to carry on using them simply as marks on paper. I was aware that those marks were a way of adding a kind of meaningless extra ‘value’ to a drawing without conveying any actual information, so in making DP I wanted to maintain a direct and efficient way of working, without any superfluous visual gewgaws.

The colouring for the book was inspired by De Stjil. Their ideal of “the abstraction of form and colour” seemed an apt one. I wanted to maintain a contrast between the story’s gothic imagery and it’s abstracted modernist setting, and the limited colour palette served to underline this. Technically, I wanted the colouring to complement the drawing rather than simply fill in space between the lines.

I was in Bath this Wednesday to give a talk at the School of Art and Design at the kind invitation of Nigel Robinson and my old friend Kerry Curtis.

The students had a project to make a poster for the talk. This potato head by Will Harvey was one of my favourites.

I also really liked this one by Ed Seymour and Naomi Wood.

Bath has an amazing collection of hill climbs and I took the opportunity to cycle up this one.

After the talk I had a drink with Nigel and Joel Curtis where we bored Nigel with conversation about Andy Roy.

De Profundis Notes

Inspired by Albrecht Dürer and Heironymous Bosch, I have been drawing demonic and monstrous characters often during the past few years. I wanted to find a way to use them specifically in a narrative, and that is how De Profundis emerged. Whilst the themes and imagery of the book had been partly explored over the past few years in various other projects I had never managed to unify them in a coherent narrative.

The protagonist for the story was initially another beaked being, but given the numerous probosci that adorn the malevolent characters that torment him in the story I felt he needed something to separate him clearly from their world. It made sense, then, to revert to the minimalist, potato-headed archetype I am probably best-known for. He’s a relative of the yellow running man in my short film,Onwards.

On reading the book, my Dad asked me if I was having a mid-life crisis. I suppose the story does reflect some of my own personal concerns – the obsessive nature of drawing, the travails of family life – though taken to a ridiculous degree.

My primary objective in the drawing of De Profundis was to make something that featured very un-moderated drawing, i.e. without pencilling or re-touching.

In starting work I realised that the traditional page-divided-into-boxes language of comics was to me a hindrance to a more direct though-to-image way of working. Being naturally drawn to the page itself as frame I decided to break the narrative down into one image per page as this seemed a more instinctive method.

I went to see the Wim Crouwel exhibition at the Design Museum on Sunday. It was Family Day and there was a poster workshop so I took the opportunity to vibe the kids* and draw some posters as well. I was particularly pleased with this one.

The exhibition is really good and definitely worth seeing. It makes a big difference seeing his posters in person. They really are beautiful.

* I was accompanied by one of my own so I wasn't being creepy, just showing off.

Many thanks to all who came to my talk at the Loop Arts Fair yesterday evening. I always feel slightly self-conscious about talking about myself for 90 minutes, but examining about old and new work with an audience gives me a useful bit of perspective on what I am doing, and I am always appreciative of the opportunity. Thanks in particular to curator Jay Cover of Nous Vous for the invitation. It was also great to meet some O.G. Silas and Amos supporters in attendance.

I had a great ride this morning from Leeds to Manchester via the iconic climb up Holme Moss. I found the time to climb it both ways, but I was absolutely cooked by the end.

I'm due to take part in a couple of events that are happening as part of this year's Pick Me Up exhibition at Somerset House in London.

The first will take place on the evening of Thursday 17 March, from 1800 to 2100 hours (6 to 9 pm to the unenlightened), where I will be doing whatever it is they do at 'Heavy Pencil', in the company of my good friend and studio-mate, Will Sweeney.

The second is a one-day Illustration symposium on Tuesday 22 March:

" Illustration is omnipresent as a language of mass communication, arguably an intrinsic cog of the mechanisms of commerce and a growth area in art & design education. It is also poorly defined and inadequately discussed.

" This one-day symposium, hosted by Mokita and Pick Me Up, will examine the subject of illustration, challenge assumptions about the practice and root out its disciplinary ‘core’.
The aim of the day is ambitious, to propose a new definition of the subject, acknowledging its rich and substantial legacy and speculating on its potential dominance in the future visual experience."

Colouring Book

I was asked by Nieves to make an ten-page colouring book for Apartamento magazine, which is out now. I was looking at my daughter's generic colouring books for inspiration and they are so much weirder than anything I could come up with.

The thing I found difficult was making drawings where all the lines met up, which is important if you're making artwork for colouring in (otherwise you don't know where to stop).

I was asked by Nathan Gale of Intercity if I would like to design a silkscreen print on the theme of Art & Sole for his new blog of the same name which concerns itself with 'Sneaker Culture' and has been launched today. I worked with Nathan on the skate-park mural in Plymouth I painted last year, and while being personally slightly ambivalent to the idea of a particular culture revolving around sports shoes, I was very happy to work with him again.

I wanted to come up with an artwork that reflected that world whilst working independently.

The print is B2 sized (500 x 700 mm), 2 colours, and comes in an edition of 50. You can buy it here.

Last year I was asked by Narue Oka from Medicom Toy in Japan if I would like to collaborate on a project to re-interprate the Hello Kitty character.

I had been interested in Hello Kitty for a long time, and the idea of that kind of iconic, almost nondescript character was interesting to me. While studying for my MA in 1995 I had come up with a character that had a perhaps similar feel that ended up appearing on my very first T-shirt graphic (for Holmes). That was probably the first appearance of the ubiquitous 'potato-head' shape.

For the project with Medicom I decided to return to that character (Hippo Girl) for inspiration. I'm pleased with the final result because if feels like I've made something that works both as part of my own iconography and also as an homage to Sanrio's character.

I believe the figure is due to launch on the 27th of November. It will also be coming out in plush form.

From the Amos Blog:

Unfortunately we will not be stocking these through our online store and neither will they be available through any of the usual Amos outlets in Europe. This is because exchange rates and import charges mean a ridiculously high retail price for each figure so prohibiting us, or any of our distributors, to import into Europe. I haven't managed a blog post here for nearly two months, so here's a bit of what I've been up to.

I've been drawing the Wisdom of Caleb cartoon. The discipline of doing it every day has been good.

I've been working on a lot of Amos stuff : graphics for next year and In Between Days.

I was turned 40 on October the 13th. In celebration I took my bike on the train up to the Lake District and rode this route, "... a 112 mile ultra hilly (mountainous!) challenge ride over all the famous Lake District passes in a single day ride." It took me seven and a half hours. Honister Pass was crazy - the road was wet so I couldn't stand up and pedal or my back wheel would spin.

I gave a talk at Camberwell art school, at the behest of an old friend from Brighton days, Peter Nencini.

I was sorting through some old artwork at my parent's house the other day and I found this poster I made for the Brighton Degree Show in 1993.

I don't normally enjoy looking at old work, but this was done long enough ago to find it really interesting. I've been asked recently about the development of the characters I draw and I had completely forgotten about what I was doing at this time. The year before I was really obsessed with Mariscal, but I don't know if it shows here.

It's also interesting to note that the whole thing was made without a computer (except I guess the information copy).

I'm part of a forthcoming exhibition of prints on the theme of London organised by Outline Editions later this month. It's at a pop-up gallery at 7 Marshall Street, London W1F 7EH. I will have two prints on show and for sale, one A4 and one A2.

AMOS will be curating the ATP In Between Days concerts this coming December. Bands so far are Caribou, Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo, with more to be confirmed.

I'll also be designing Amos artwork for the event and will have a separate art show on display.

I'm particularly excited to see the amazing Caribou, who kindly let me use their music in my Onwards film.

Pick Me Up/Print Club

I've just agreed to take part in a workshop run by Print Club London as part of the Pick Me Up graphic art fair at Somerset House in London this coming April. I'll be making a 2-colour B2 (700 x 500mm) silkscreen print on the afternoon of Friday 23 April which will be sold on the day for £50.

There's an interview with me by Dan Nadel in the March 2010 issue of Juxtapoz. I was really pleased Dan agreed to write the piece - he's a very perceptive and erudite chap. The interview was a really interesting one, and gave me an enlightening perspective on what I do.

They also shot a nice portrait of me on a run along the Embankment past Battersea Power Station which now looks a bit of a swan-song to my running career.
